Lake Petén Itzá

Lake Petén Itzá, located in the heart of the Petén department, is one of Guatemala’s most beautiful natural gems. Surrounded by green hills and picturesque towns, this turquoise-blue lake is the country’s second largest and a place where nature and history intertwine in a truly magical way. Along its shores lie communities such as Flores, San Andrés, San José, and El Remate, which blend local charm with ecological and cultural tourism. Sailing across its calm waters, taking a refreshing swim, or watching the sunset from nearby viewpoints are experiences that reveal the unique serenity of Petén. 💡 Curiosities Lake Petén Itzá is fed primarily by underground springs, helping maintain the clarity and purity of its waters. Within the lake are several small islands, some of which hold archaeological remains from the Maya civilization, including the ancient settlement of Nojpetén, now Flores Island. The lake is also home to a wide variety of bird and fish species, forming part of a vital ecosystem in northern Guatemala. In addition, its surroundings serve as a gateway to major archaeological sites such as Tikal, Yaxhá, and Uaxactún, making the lake the natural and cultural heart of the Maya world.
