Uaxactún Village and Archaeological Site

Deep within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the village of Uaxactún is one of the most authentic and tranquil communities in Petén, where wooden houses, dirt roads, and the slow rhythm of jungle life coexist with thousands of years of history. From here, a short trail leads to the Uaxactún archaeological site, one of the oldest and most fascinating ceremonial centers of the Maya world. Amid jungle-covered temples, silent plazas, and structures aligned with the sun, visitors encounter a place where astronomy, architecture, and spirituality merge into a single experience. Walking through Uaxactún is to feel time move differently: howler monkeys announce the dawn, tree shadows drift across ancient stones, and the stillness of the surroundings invites reflection on the deep bond between the ancient Maya and the cosmos. 💡 Curiosities Uaxactún’s E-Group complex is one of the oldest solar observatories in the Americas. Its three temples are aligned with the sunrises of the solstices and equinoxes, allowing the Maya to measure time with remarkable precision. The modern village of Uaxactún was founded by chicle collectors in the 20th century and today exists among the ruins, creating a unique blend of living archaeology and contemporary culture.
