Tak’alik Ab’aj Archaeological Site

Tak’alik Ab’aj, located in the department of Retalhuleu, is one of Guatemala’s oldest archaeological sites and a key reference for understanding the early processes of Mesoamerican civilization. The archaeological park preserves evidence of the cultural transition between the Olmec and Maya worlds, reflected in monumental sculptures and ceremonial structures. Its trails wind through a landscape where pre-Hispanic architecture blends with tropical vegetation and coffee plantations, highlighting both the historical and natural value of the site. 💡 Curiosities Tak’alik Ab’aj shows evidence of occupation dating back to around 800 BC and is home to more than 300 carved monuments. In 2023, it was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding value to Mesoamerican history.
