Flores Island

Flores Island is located at the center of Lake Petén Itzá and serves as the urban and cultural core of the municipality of Flores, in the department of Petén. The present-day settlement was established on the pre-Hispanic site of Nojpetén, the last capital of the Itzá people, conquered in 1697. The island preserves a compact urban layout with cobblestone streets and architecture influenced by the colonial period, making it one of the most important historical and tourist landmarks in northern Guatemala. 💡 Curiosities Flores Island is connected to the mainland by a bridge linking it to Santa Elena and San Benito. From its waterfront promenade, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Petén Itzá, along with recreational and tourism activities. The island also serves as a key access point for exploring many of the department’s attractions, including archaeological sites and natural destinations throughout Petén.
