El Trapiche Regional Museum, San Jerónimo

The El Trapiche Regional Museum, located in the municipality of San Jerónimo, in the department of Baja Verapaz, forms part of the historic complex of Ingenio San Jerónimo, one of the oldest agro-industrial estates in Guatemala. The museum preserves colonial-era buildings, gardens, historic machinery, and former production areas that offer insight into the development of sugarcane cultivation, livestock farming, and rural life in the valley during the colonial period. Its guided route provides a comprehensive view of the region’s economic and social history. 💡 Curiosities Ingenio San Jerónimo was developed by the Dominican friars during the colonial era and represents one of the earliest centers of sugar production in Guatemala. The complex still preserves original elements such as the sugar mill (trapiche) and other historic production structures, now safeguarded and displayed as part of the cultural heritage of San Jerónimo and Baja Verapaz.
