The Lanquín Caves

The Lanquín Caves are a limestone cave system located just 1 km west of the town of Lanquín, in Alta Verapaz. Declared a national park in 1955, they cover approximately 11 hectares officially designated as a protected area. Inside, visitors can explore an impressive karst landscape shaped by stalactites, stalagmites, natural chambers, and narrow passageways. While only part of the system has been adapted for visitors, many galleries remain unexplored, suggesting that its natural complexity extends far beyond what is currently known. 💡 Curiosities The caves are home to large bat populations that emerge at dusk, creating a truly unique natural spectacle. For the local Maya communities—especially the Q’eqchi’—the caves hold deep spiritual significance, seen as sacred places filled with ancestral myths and memories. This blend of natural, geological, and cultural value makes Lanquín an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, nature, and a deeper connection to Guatemala’s roots.
