Chicabal Lagoon

Chicabal Lagoon is located within the crater of the volcano of the same name in Guatemala’s western highlands and forms part of the Guatemalan System of Protected Areas. Surrounded by cloud forest and often wrapped in mist, it is recognized as a sacred site by the Mam Maya people and remains an active ceremonial space. The natural setting and spiritual significance of the lagoon make it an important cultural and landscape landmark—especially in the early hours of the day, when traditional ceremonies and offerings take place. 💡 Curiosities Chicabal Lagoon sits at approximately 2,700 meters above sea level. It is considered a natural altar where Maya rituals are still performed on dates linked to the solstices and the sacred days of the Cholq’ij calendar.
