Morería José Alejandro Tistoj

The Morería José Alejandro Tistoj, located in Totonicapán, is one of the most representative cultural spaces of the Guatemalan highlands. This workshop-museum preserves and brings to life one of the country’s oldest and most colorful traditions: the creation of masks and costumes for traditional Maya dances. Inside, visitors can admire unique pieces hand-carved and hand-painted, used in celebrations that blend religious, historical, and symbolic elements deeply rooted in K’iche’ identity. 💡 Curiosities The morería has been run for generations by the Tistoj family, renowned for their mastery in crafting masks that portray characters such as conquistadors, animals, kings, and Maya deities. Each piece is made using traditional techniques and natural materials, reflecting the deep connection between art, spirituality, and community. During patron saint festivities, the masks created here come to life in dances such as La Conquista and El Torito, filling the streets of Totonicapán with color and movement. Morería José Alejandro Tistoj is, without a doubt, a guardian of Guatemala’s living cultural heritage.
